UCSD Kendo Alumni

This portion of the site is dedicated to our UCSD Kendo Club and UCSD Kendo Team alumni.

Dr. Henry Kikunaga, O.D. (Kikunaga sensei)

Henry earned his Optometry doctorate in Chicago, and is currently practicing in Chula Vista.

He is currently a 4-dan and sensei at UCSD, SDKB

Catherine Kaori Kikunaga, B.A. Japanese Studies (Kikunaga sensei)

Kaori is currently finishing her dental hygienist degree in Visalia, CA. She earned her 4-dan and also was a member of the USA Kendo Team in 2004 and 2006, competing in the WKC at Glasgow and Taipei.

Matthew Schultzel, B.S. General Biology, B.A. Psychology

Matthew is currently earning his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree at Touro College of Medicine. He earned his 1dan, and was former President and co-founder of the Club, as well as a member of the UCSD Kendo Team.

Tam Hoang, B.A. Literature

Tam is currently earning his teaching credentials at UCLA:Teaching Graduate Studies program. He earned his 1dan and was former VP Internal of the Club, as well as member of the UCSD Kendo Team.

Bryan (Young Shik) Cho, B.S. Management Science

Bryan is currently working in LA, and will head to Seoul University for engineering graduate school in August. He earned his 1dan and was a member of the UCSD Kendo Team.

Mio Shimizu, B.A. ICAM

Mio is currently working at Sony Computer Entertainment as a translator and web designer. She has her 3dan and was former Secretary of the Club, as well as a UCSD Kendo Team member.

Mimi Hayashi, B.S. General Biology, M.S. Biology

Mimi is currently applying to medical school, and teaching human physiology at Mesa College. She earned her 2dan and was a member of the UCSD Kendo Team.

Randall Iwashita

Randall is graduating in June and plans to travel. He earned his 3dan and was a member on the UCSD Kendo Team.

Keri Chen, B.S. Bioengineering

Keri is applying to biochemistry graduate school at UCSD, and earned her 1dan.

Scott Chang, B.S. Chemistry

Scott is currently teaching kendo and iai-do at UCSD, and working in as a loan officer in San Diego. He earned his 3dan.

Dr. Imre Kovacs, M.D., Ph.D.

Imre graciously coached the UCSD Kendo Team to its strong result in 2004 and victory in 2005. He is currently conducting post-doctoral research at the Burhnam Institute in San Diego, CA. He has his 3dan.

Susan was a major organizer in the founding of the UCSD Kendo Team, and has supported our expansion into intercollegiate tournaments. She currently resides in Singapore and has her 3dan.
